GREGORIA VALLADARES

EARLY CHILDHOOD: Gregoria (Golla) was born in Monterey, Nuevo Leon (Mexico). She was the oldest of ten children born to Rosalio Valladares and Maria Bonifacia Godina. She came with her family from Mexico. Shortly after she was born her father was stationed with Federalistas Mexican Army in Chihuahua, Chihuahua (Mexico). Another daughter was born. They stayed there until 1914 when ___. They decided to flee to the United States of America. They crossed the border somewhere in the Big Bend area of Texas. The had fled with an Army wagon loaded with weapons and ammunition. It got so heavy at the crossing that they decided to dump all the weapons and ammunition in the Rio Grande. The arrived in Chisos, Texas (which no longer exists) where her father obtained employment at the Chisos Mining Company (located in the Chisos Mountains). From there they moved to San Angelo, Texas and by 1924 they were living in Loraine, Texas. They finally arrived in the Rhineland area sometime around 1927. Her father died at an early age when she was 21. Her mother died in Altus, Oklahoma, living her last days with her.

EDUCATION: Greogria did not have a formal education. She was taught to read and write by her mother.

MILITARY: Gregoria did not serve in the military.

CAREER: She spent her growing up years working as a part of the family group working the fields in the Knox Cty/Rhineland area. She also worked helping clear up pasturelands for cultivation. She continued this through her marriages, and later when her own family was growing up, they worked as a family unit working in the cotton fields in Paducah. During the time they were living in Altus, they would got up north to Colorado to work in the beet fields during the spring and summer season, sometimes staying until the fall. When they returned home they worked the cotton fields. They did this from about 1956 through 1967. The latter years they also went to work in Kansas.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Gregoria enjoyed reading, especially her Bible.

MARRIAGE: When Greogoria was about 17, she had a daughter, which she gave to her sister Josefina (who was a child herself) to raise and care for. This child however died while still a young infant. At the age of 18, she met and lived for a short while with a widower, Mr. Hernandez. Things didn't work out, so she left. Shortly thereafter, she discovered she was pregnant and had a son. Her son was "adopted" by her parents and raised as a twin to their daughter Isabel of about the same age. Some time later she met Vicente Leija in 193x, married him, but divorced some time later. Her divorce became final on October 25, 1940. Golla had known Antonio Nuņez for some time and on October 1937 they decided to live together, and eventually married on October 26, 1940. They were married at Benjamin, Texas by the Justice of the Peace (JP), G. M. Brijan. During the time her husband was in the military (WWII), Golla lived in Knox City, in a tent next to her mother's house. After his release, they lived in the Munday/Knox City area for a while and then moved to Stamford for a while, and finally landing in Paducah around 1949. They stayed in Paducah until around 1956, when they relocated to Altus, Oklahoma

CHILDREN: Gregoria and Mr. Hernandez had a son:
