RESIDENCE: 1216 Dumont Drive, Richardson, Texas 75080-5824 (972-437-0083) (elnapo@aol.com)EARLY CHILDHOOD: George (Napo) was born in Crowell (Foard) Texas, at home (in a dugout) at the old Trinidad and Maria Leija's homestead. He is the third of ninechildren born to Jose Rios Brown and Josefina Valladares. George name at birth was Napoleon, however, the priest said that it was not an appropriate name because it was not a christiona name. The name on the baptismal certificate reads "Georgio" (it was intended to be George). Therefore the name George was used therafter.
During the summer of 1954, the family took a trip to work in Wisconsin picking cherries, coming down towards Illinois to work in the tomatoes fields picking tomatoes. During the next six years, from 1955-1961, he went with the family to work in the beet fields in Galeton (the Greeley, Colorado area } from about May to September/October of each year. As he got older, he also worked helping the farmer in doing some irrigating crops, milking and feeding cattle. Also helped harvest some of the crops (corn & beets) during the latter part of the year. Returning to Crowell, duriing those years he worked odd jobs, picking cotton in the fall and winters. Other times were spent mowing yards, and hunting rabbits with some of the guys about the same age, who had also dropped out of school.
EDUCATION: He attended elementary School in the Crowell Independent School District (CISD) from the first through eight grades. . He graduated from grade school in May 1955. Having passed the high school and college level general education development (GED) tests, he applied and was admitted to Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He attended school there for two years (1967-1968), lived in an apartment with Jesse for a while also working at Birge Motor Company (a car dealer)and got his first taste of television, working with Jesse doing some car and appliance commercials for Birge Motor Company.
In 1968 he transferred to North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) to continue his education. He worked his way through school working at Scientific Control Corporation (SCC), in Farmers Branch, Texas. It was computer-manufacturing company (which filed bankruptcy, and no longer exists), He also worked at Merico, a Mrs. Baird biscuit manufacturing plant in Denton, Texas. Baldemar joined him for one semester, after which Baldemar enlisted in the Marines.
He purchased a Mobile home to live in until graduation in 1970. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a major in Accounting.
MILITARY: In November 14, 1963, George was drafted (US54328183) into the military, at Amarillo, Texas. From there went on to Ft. Polk for 8 weeks of basic training and eight more weeks of advanced individual training (AIT). After completing his training, he spent the rest of his tour of duty at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He worked as a personnel specialist at Headquarters United Stated Artillery Training Center-Field Artillery (USATC-FA), interviewing and keeping records updated for trainees going through artillery training. He also tested and signed up trainees for either airborne or special forces training. He was released from active duty as a Specialist (E-4) at Ft. Sill in November 13, 1965. He received the Good Conduct and Sharpshooter medals. He received his discharge in 1969.
CAREER: Up until being drafted, George worked as a farm laborer, or as a member of the family workgroup, working as a migrant worker in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Colorado. At Crowell he worked with the family chopping (hoeing) cotton in the spring and summer, and then picking cotton in the fall and winter months. In about 1962, he worked on construction, building a dam in Benjamin, and bridges on Highway 6, south of Crowell. Just before being drafted into the Army in November 1963, he was working with his father helping a homebuilder build and remodel some homes in Crowell. After being discharged from the military, he worked one summer as a member of a wheat harvest crew with brothers Jesse, and Baldemar. They traveled as far as Colorado before quitting due to problems with the employer. After that, he worked as service station attendant in the local Martin Gulf station, and later worked construction in Crowell, helping to build the new basketball gymnasium. After this, he attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
After graduation, he worked at a business forms company until he could get a permanent job in his field. That opportunity came in October 1970 when he got a job with the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) at the Houston Branch Office, where he stayed until December 1989. During this time he was assigned to audit Government contractors in an area covering most of south Texas and Louisiana. Such contractors as Lockheed, IBM, Rockwell, etc., and lots of small contractors including mom-and-pop shops doing Government work. He started as a trainee auditor and was promoted to Supervisory Auditor during his tenure at Houston. In December 1989, he asked for, and was given a transfer to the Texas Instruments Resident Office in Dallas, Texas. He worked there as the Branch Manger's Assistant and Supervisory Auditor until the end of 1993. From there he was transferred to the Richardson Branch Office, assigned to supervise the suboffices for Rockwell, and later the Electrospace segment of Chrysler Corporation (later bought out by E-Systems, and eventually Rockwell).
In September 30, 1998, he took an early retirement from DCAA. The agency was offering early retirement due to the cutback in the Defense budget. Prior to this he had bought some rental properties in Bowie, Texas (where Jesse lives). He stays in Bowie during the week, spending his time remodeling, maintaining these properties. He sold his townhouse in Houston Texas in 2003.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: George learned to play the guitar at an early age, fourteen, and played in church during his growing up years until being drafted. He played at the Spanish church in Cowell, at "confraternidades." and also at the First Assembly of God in Denton, Texas during his years at North Texas State University (now UNT). While living in Houston he was very active as the social director of the "Singles Group"at church (Evangelistic Temple pastored by Rev. Austin Wilkerson) . In 1970 went on his first ski trip to Colorado with the church in Houston. And later to Guatemala (after the earthquake) in 1977, to help rebuild some dormitories for a Bible School. He was a member of the Evangelistic Temple choir and went on an overseas trip in 1980 going to England and Israel. In 1983 he went to Germany to visit John and Amelia (and the kids). While there, he toured Switzerland, and The Netherlands (Holland). He has also taken numerous trips south of the border to Mexico.
Shortly before retiring, he starting acting as an extra in "Walker, Texas Ranger" a weekly TV show with Chuck Norris, and other feature and TV movies shot in the Dallas area. Some of those are "To Serve and Protect" (TV movie), "Cadillac Jack, The Legend Lives On" (TV Movie). In 2002 he performed with the Dalla Opera production of "Fidelio" as a soldier.
MARRIAGE: George has never married.
CHILDREN: George has no children.
