EARLY CHILDHOOD: Josephine (Nena/Josie) was born in Knox City, Texas. She is the first of nine children born to Jose Rios Brown and Josefina Valladares. During the summer of 1952, the family took a trip to work in Wisconsin picking cherries, coming down towards Illinois to work in the tomatoes fields picking tomatoes. During the next 2 years, from 1955-1956, she went with the family to work in the beet fields in the Greeley, Colorado area from about May to September/October of each year.

EDUCATION: She attended elementary school in the Crowell Independent School District (CISD) from the first through eighth grades. She graduated from grade school in May 1955.

MILITARY: Josephine did not serve in the Military.

CAREER: Josie started out as part of the family work unit working in the fields chopping (hoeing) and picking cotton, depending on the season. After her marriage she continued working in the fields, accompanying Ray as he traveled with the wheat harvest crews working their way north to the Dakotas. Later when the Crowell Cap Factory was opened in Crowell, she worked there until 1987. She contracted cancer and she became too ill to work.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Josie enjoyed sewing. She made her children's clothes when they were growing up. She later picked up knitting.

MARRIAGE: Josephine met Reynaldo (Ray) De Los Santos sometime in 1953 in Crowell when the De Los Santos family moved to Crowell and became members of the Templo Getsemani. Josie and Ray were married in the Templo Getsemani De Las Assambleas de Dios, in Crowell in March xx, 1957. The Reverend Demetrio Flores from Abilene, Texas performed the ceremony.
